You wipe after a bowel movement and notice bright red blood. It is quite a shocking experience and can be terrifying at the same time. This usually signals a large hemorrhoid that is very inflamed.
The bleeding is caused by swollen veins in the rectum and is frightening, but usually not serious. The surface of the hemorrhoid is actually very delicate and with hard stools can scratch the surface and cause it to bleed. There may also be pain and itching just before and after the bowel movement.
Bleeding hemorrhoids usually clot quickly and the bleeding stops soon after the bowel movement. The blood is always bright red in color and if blood is black, tar colored or excessive then it is important to contact your doctor.
